In October 2018, only a few days after announcing it, RM released mono., a release he himself chose not to call a mixtape but a playlist. That decision alone signaled that this was something different, quieter and more personal than anything he had put out before. The title itself carries a double meaning, since mono suggests both something singular and something solitary, and it was precisely that sense of solitude that ran through the whole release. RM described it as a record of who he had been between 2016 and the start of 2018, a collection of thoughts, feelings, and experiences from that period. Interestingly, he deliberately did not release the lyrics, because he wanted to leave an empty space in which everyone could find their own meaning, inviting the listener to finish the story themselves.

Musically, mono. is a tapestry of muted, almost monochrome tones, woven from soft electronics and warm, wistful melodies. Unlike his first mixtape, here RM relied much more on collaboration, building with a range of musicians a sound that is at once calm, melancholic, and comforting. Through songs like seoul, moonchild, and forever rain runs the motif of the city, of solitude, and of rain, a rain that for him is neither sad nor cheerful, but somewhere in between, much like the moods he describes. In moonchild, he speaks to everyone who, like him, lives and creates at night, offering them the comfort of not being alone.

Quiet and unassuming as it was, mono. resonated everywhere. It climbed high on the American chart and broke records for a Korean solo artist, ending the year among the most critically acclaimed k-pop releases as well. It proved that RM was not just a rapper, but a complete musician, a writer and singer able to convey the finest shades of feeling.

For many, mono. remains one of the most beautiful and intimate works in the whole of BTS, a release people return to in quiet, wistful moments.
