Hope World

When j-hope released Hope World in March 2018, fans got exactly what the title promised, an invitation into his world. After RM and Suga had already released solo work of their own before him, j-hope was the third rapper of the group to step out on his own, and he did it in a way that perfectly reflected his nature, bright, warm, and full of light.

Behind that cheerful tone, however, lay a dream he had carried for a long time. He himself spoke of how much it meant to him to make and release a song he had created about himself, calling it a dream he had worked on, studied, and researched for years in order to make it real. Hope World was conceived as a kind of introduction, a chance to show the world, and those who did not yet know him, who j-hope was outside the group and what kind of music he carried inside him. The title plays on his name and the idea of an entire world that is him, and the title track brings this to life quite literally, with a playful nod to Jules Verne's classic adventure novel about a journey beneath the sea, as an invitation to dive into his imagination.

Musically, the mixtape is bright, rhythmic, and accessible, full of energy that j-hope simply cannot hold back. The lead track Daydream and the cheerful Airplane show his sunny side, but also his skill at adapting his voice and rapping to match a song's mood. The whole thing lasts barely twenty minutes, but that very brevity makes it feel like a short, joyful getaway.

What made Hope World special exceeded even expectations themselves. The mixtape climbed high on the American album chart and made j-hope the best-charting Korean solo artist up to that point, and it did so with a release that, like the other rappers' mixtapes in the group, was made available for free. In doing so, he showed that brightness and warmth could be just as powerful as the darkness and anger with which his fellow members had built their solo worlds.

Later he would say that Hope World was only the beginning, that he was still somewhat inside a safe box, before he would dare to step further with a later album and reveal his darker sides as well. But that is exactly what gives this first release its special charm, because it captures j-hope in his purest, most joyful form, at a moment when he shares the joy of creating with those who listen to him.
