O!RUL8,2?

Just a few months after their debut, in September 2013, BTS returned with their first mini album titled O!RUL8,2?, whose title, read aloud in English, means roughly Oh, are you late too? It was a telling question, because the whole album carried a message addressed to young people, a call to find happiness and meaning in life before it's too late.

The album naturally built on the debut release, deepening the themes of dreams and happiness, but also the frustration young people feel under the pressure of a strict education system. Sonically it was bold, with fiery rap, trap rhythms and touches of R&B, and it further cemented the group's hip hop identity.

The title track N.O summed up the whole message. In it BTS speaks out openly against a system that turns children into machines for studying and competing, robbing them of their youth and their right to their own dreams. It was a continuation of the rebellion from No More Dream, but sharper and clearer still, the voice of a generation that feels trapped under the weight of expectations. Alongside it, the song Attack on Bangtan brought the energy and self-confidence of a group still fighting its way up, yet already aware of its own worth.

What makes O!RUL8,2? important is that it showed the debut hadn't been a fluke. With a second release, BTS confirmed once again that it had a clear stance and wasn't afraid to speak about what troubles young people, even when those subjects were uncomfortable. Instead of empty love songs, they offered something their peers could actually recognize themselves in.

For fans this mini album has remained an important part of the so called school trilogy, the second step in a story about youth, rebellion and the search for self. Already here you can clearly hear a group that knows who it is and what it wants to say, and it's precisely that consistency, that courage to speak on behalf of their generation, that set BTS apart from the crowd from the very beginning.
