School Trilogy

The story of BTS began far from the spotlight, at a small and, at the time, almost unknown label, with seven young men who still had to prove they belonged on the scene. Even the group's name reveals their original intent. Bangtan Sonyeondan, loosely translated as bulletproof scouts, was conceived so the group would act as a protective layer, shielding young people from the prejudices and pressures society places on them. From the very start, then, BTS did not want to present themselves merely as entertainment, but as the voice of their generation.

The first three releases, 2 Cool 4 Skool, O!RUL8,2? and Skool Luv Affair, make up what is known as the School Trilogy, joined by the somewhat sharper follow-up album Dark & Wild. Everything revolves around the world of teenagers: school, the pressure to succeed, an uncertain future, and first love. The debut track No More Dream asks whether young people even have a dream of their own or are simply following what is expected of them, while N.O speaks out about an education system that demands nothing from children but competition and achievement. Alongside them, Boy in Luv and Danger bring the energy of youthful infatuation.

What set the group apart immediately was the fact that, unlike much of the scene at the time, they took part in writing and composing their own music. RM, Suga, and j-hope, as the group's rap line, built their lyrics out of lived experience, so the themes felt genuinely felt rather than assigned.

Their beginning was far from easy. As a group from a small company, they were underestimated, and at times openly looked down upon within the industry, something they addressed directly in a series of tracks titled Cypher. It was precisely this outsider position, the need to keep proving themselves, that became their driving force and a theme that resonated deeply with young people. The School Trilogy was thus not merely a beginning, but the foundation for everything that followed, the first sign that behind the choreography and the rhythm stood a group that had something to say.
