2 Cool 4 Skool

Every great story has its beginning, and for BTS it carries the title 2 Cool 4 Skool. Released in June 2013, this debut single album marked the arrival of seven young men from a small, then almost unknown record label, who came onto the scene with a clear intention, not just to entertain, but to say something. On the very same day the album came out, the group also held its debut performance in Seoul, stepping into a story that would go on to change music around the world.

Even that first release showed exactly what would set BTS apart. At a time when the Korean scene was full of polished, sweet concepts, they arrived with something entirely different, a raw blend of hip hop, rebellion and honest messages. The album was conceived as a candid look at their determination and passion for music, carrying a message of resistance against social prejudice and pressure. It wasn't a pose, it was a stance.

The heart of the album is the debut track No More Dream, which cuts straight to the point. In it the group speaks about young people who have lost their own dreams, or never even had the chance to dream them, because society pushes them to simply study and follow a predetermined path. It was a bold subject for a debut song, a direct call for young people to ask themselves what they truly want. Alongside it, the energetic We Are Bulletproof Pt.2 presented the group as a crew that had fought for its place, while the rest of the songs blended fiery rap, trap rhythms and soul-soaked melodies.

What makes this album special is the fact that the members, especially the rappers RM, Suga and j-hope, took part in creating it themselves, writing from their own experience. It's not widely known just how early they started, since RM was writing verses as a sixteen year old, with a sharpness that outpaced his years. It was precisely that authorial honesty that gave the album a weight debut releases rarely carry.

Looking back, 2 Cool 4 Skool may not have been the most noticed album of that year, but it was something more important, the foundation and the starting point of everything. Already sown within it were all the motifs that would come to define their career, rebellion, honesty, concern for young people and a refusal to fit into the mold. For fans it has therefore remained precious as the first page of one of the greatest music stories of recent times, proof that seven boys from a small company knew exactly what they wanted to say from day one.
