Indigo

There is something moving about deciding to close a chapter of your life while it is still open. That is exactly what RM did with Indigo, released in December 2022, which he described simply and precisely as the last entry of his twenties. It was his first true studio album, his first full length work since mono. in 2018, and a kind of farewell to a decade he had spent almost entirely as the leader of BTS.

The very title carries a deliberate image. Indigo is a color, that deep blue that dyes denim, and RM imagined the album like an old, faded pair of jeans, a record that had gradually faded in the sun over time. That idea of fading captures perfectly what he wanted to say, that youth, like the color on fabric, slowly fades and turns into something new. The album was conceived, then, as a diary, an autobiographical record of the thoughts, doubts, and feelings from the period that shaped the man he became.

It is interesting how RM himself explained the essence of the album. He said that, consciously or not, he had spent years putting his life on display for the world, so he decided to turn that into an actual exhibition. And indeed, the whole of Indigo plays like a gallery he guides us through as curator, choosing not only the stories but also the guests. As many as eight of the ten songs came about in collaboration with other musicians, among them major names like Erykah Badu and Anderson .Paak, yet RM never lets them overshadow his own voice, folding each of them in with clear intent. That love of art, which is well known since RM is a passionate collector and admirer of visual work, runs through the whole album, starting with the song Yun, named after a respected Korean painter, in which RM draws a parallel between himself and an artist still searching for his own signature.

Sonically, Indigo is warm and refined, a blend of neo soul, jazz, hip hop, and electronic music, music that celebrates quiet and stillness in a world that rushes past. The lead single Wild Flower, featuring youjeen, perhaps sums up the whole album best. In it RM speaks about the emptiness fame can bring and about his wish to live like a modest, quiet wildflower rather than a blazing flame that burns out fast. It is a song about the search for peace, vulnerable and beautiful, and for many the album's most beloved moment.

What makes Indigo special is its honest breadth. RM said it was an album for anyone wondering how to live rightly, for those carrying the weight of expectation and searching for their place in the world. That is exactly why it resonated far beyond the boundaries of a fandom, breaking the record for the biggest opening on streaming platforms for an album by a Korean solo artist.

Looking back, Indigo sounded like a calm, mature goodbye, and on more than one level. It was RM's farewell to his own twenties, but since he himself went off to the military not long after, it was also a quiet goodbye to fans before a pause. It is no accident that he recommended listening to it while walking, driving, or as flowers bloom and wilt, in other words in the moments when he is not there with them. It was a parting gift, an album that stays, like a good painting on a wall, one you keep returning to even after the artist has briefly stepped away.
