Face

Some albums come out of joy, and some out of the need to turn what was lived through into something meaningful. Jimin's Face, released in March 2023, belongs to the latter kind. It was his first solo album and, importantly, the first full album by any vocalist in BTS, and Jimin conceived it as an honest, almost diary like record of what he went through during the pandemic, when the world stopped, and with it everything that had filled him as a performer.

He himself explained that the album follows a chronological sequence of his feelings from that period, and that it should be listened to in order, from the first song to the last, because only then does the story reach its full meaning. That period was not easy for him. He openly admitted that he felt lost and confused when performing and touring suddenly disappeared, and the album traces that path through difficult emotions, from anger and loneliness toward eventual release. It is exactly that honesty, the willingness to share even the vulnerable parts, that makes Face so powerful.

The whole album is built around the image of two faces. One, as Jimin called it, is the invisible face, the tender and vulnerable one, and the other is the indefinable face, stronger and bolder. That duality runs through all six songs. The album opens with Face-off, where anger and a sense of betrayal break through, and after a short interlude comes Like Crazy, the lead single inspired by the film of the same name about love at a distance. In it Jimin sings about wanting to stay inside a dream, in a numbing haze that pushes the pain away for a moment. Right after comes Alone, a quiet, wistful song about the emptiness that returns the moment the lights go out, an honest look at loneliness. The album closes with Set Me Free Pt. 2, defiant and liberating, in which Jimin declares he will no longer hide, even if it hurts. The title deliberately echoes Suga's Set Me Free, a warm nod to his fellow member.

Sonically, Face is refined electronic pop with touches of hip hop and R&B, inspired by the sound of the eighties, but with an emotional depth that keeps it from ever feeling shallow. Jimin's soft, distinctive voice moves between tenderness and force, following the mood of each song.

How much effort went into the album was best seen in the accompanying documentary about its making, which follows Jimin through the whole recording process, with all its struggles, doubts, and small victories. For fans he also prepared a special hidden track titled DearARMY, a sincere letter of thanks to those who follow him, which he sang accompanied only by guitar.

The album's success was enormous and historic. Face broke domestic sales records, and the song Like Crazy carried Jimin to the very top of the American Billboard Hot 100, making him the first Korean solo artist to achieve that. But as important as those records are, the heart of this album lies elsewhere, in the courage not to stay silent about a hard period but to turn it into art. Just as Suga poured his struggles into his music, Jimin showed through Face that confronting yourself, however painful, can also be a path toward release. And in doing so he left the listener something precious, the feeling that they are not alone in whatever they are going through.
