While the other members built their solo albums as introspective journeys into their own inner world, Jungkook went in a completely different direction. His debut album Golden, released in November 2023, is pure, shimmering global pop, an album made to be performed, to ring out on a huge stage and conquer charts around the world. And that was exactly his intention.

The title alone says it all. Golden calls back to the nickname Jungkook has carried since the very beginning, the golden maknae, the golden youngest member, a name he earned because he seems to be good at everything, from singing and dancing to sports and drawing. But the album, as he explained himself, was also inspired by the idea of golden moments, those peak points along his path. He admitted that making it he felt a need to prove something, to himself and to the world, mixed with excitement and nerves. That proving was very concrete, since, as he put it, he wanted to test just how far he could reach with his voice and his abilities, entirely on his own.

Sonically, Golden is a bold pivot toward global pop. The album is entirely in English, and on it Jungkook gathered an impressive team of world class producers and songwriters, among them names behind some of the biggest global hits, even the team behind BTS's own Dynamite. The result is a run of polished, powerful pop songs that move between dance rhythms and tender ballads. The album is led by three singles, Seven, which became the fastest song in history to reach a billion streams on a single platform, then 3D, and the title track Standing Next to You, a retro funk song inspired by the style of the great pop icons, carrying the message that he will stand by the one he loves through every situation.

Although Golden isn't a classic concept album, a loose narrative still runs through it, since the first half traces the rise of a love and the second its ending and everything left behind afterward. But the heart of the album isn't in the story, it's in the performance. Jungkook wanted to show himself as a top tier global pop artist, standing equal with the biggest Western stars, and in that he fully succeeded. His voice, capable of both power and tenderness, slips into every genre with ease.

The success was massive and immediate. The album shattered streaming records and confirmed Jungkook as a true global star, and he carried that energy onto the stage as well, even staging a surprise, unannounced performance at Times Square in New York in front of a huge crowd of fans. He later captured that whole stretch of his solo rise in a documentary film.

What makes Golden special is exactly this clarity of intention. While the other members sought silence and introspection, Jungkook openly wanted to shine, and to do so without apology. He made an album that doesn't try to be a deep confession but rather top tier entertainment, and he stayed true to that all the way through. For many, that is itself proof of his versatility, since the golden maknae didn't just show that he can do everything, but that, when he wants to, he can stand shoulder to shoulder with the biggest pop stars in the world.
