Map of the Soul: Persona

In April 2019, BTS released Map of the Soul: Persona and opened a new, introspective chapter of their music, this time drawing on psychology for inspiration. Having spent the Love Yourself era teaching us to love ourselves, they now turned to exploring the human soul itself, leaning on the ideas of Swiss psychiatrist Carl Jung. With the very first album of this era, they posed a big question: who am I, really.

At the center of it all is Jung's concept of the persona, the mask we show the world to hide what lies within. In the opening track Intro: Persona, RM questions all the faces he has gathered throughout his life, wondering which of them is the real one. Yet despite the serious subject matter, the album sounded bright and joyful, like a return to love and light after the more mature themes of the previous years.

The title track Boy With Luv, recorded with American singer Halsey, was a cheerful, danceable ode to love for the small, everyday things. Unlike the big, thunderous themes, it spoke of the beauty found in little details, and became one of their most infectious hits. Alongside it, the album brought the upbeat Mikrokosmos, the song Make It Right, in whose writing Ed Sheeran also took part, and the powerful Dionysus, in which the group invokes the Greek god of ecstasy as an image of artistic rapture.

The album's success was immense. Persona became their third album to reach the very top of the American chart and, at that point, the best selling album in the history of South Korea. It also marked the beginning of an era in which they filled the world's biggest stadiums, London's Wembley among them.

What makes Persona special is exactly that blend of lightness and depth. Beneath its bright, danceable surface hides a serious question about identity, about the difference between who we are and what we show. It was only the first part of a bigger story, one that would descend into deeper, darker layers of the soul on the next album. For fans, Persona has remained beloved as a joyful yet thoughtful return, proof that BTS can be both fun and profound at the same time.
