Map of the Soul
Intro: Persona
After the message of self-acceptance, BTS set out on an even deeper exploration, this time into the depths of the human soul. The Map of the Soul era, made up of the albums Persona and 7, draws on the psychology of the Swiss psychiatrist Carl Jung, filtered through the book Jung's Map of the Soul, even borrowing concepts related to that book's chapters.
At its center stand three Jungian concepts. The persona is the mask we show the world, the face we want others to see. The shadow is the hidden, repressed side, everything we struggle to admit even to ourselves, yet which we must still confront in order to become whole. The ego, meanwhile, is our awareness of ourselves. The 2019 album Persona opens the question of one's own identity, and with the song Boy With Luv the group returns to joy and love.
The 2020 album 7 brings these themes together, and its title carries multiple meanings. Seven is the number of members, who were at the time marking seven years of working together, but seven is also, in Jungian symbolism, the number of spiritual wholeness, a sign of a person who has walked their path and become whole. In the song Black Swan, the group speaks of every artist's deepest fear, the fear of one day losing passion for the very thing one loves most. The song Dionysus invokes the Greek god of wine and ecstasy, the one who, through art and rapture, frees us from the mask and restores honesty. In the song ON, the group turns decisively toward its own shadow and accepts it, while in Inner Child a member speaks tenderly to his younger, frightened self.
It was an era in which BTS showed that pop music can also be serious introspection, a journey through the light and dark of one's own interior. Rather than avoiding difficult questions about identity and success, they faced them openly, confirming that behind flawlessly executed performances stood carefully considered art.
