A guide to ARIRANG: the album that brought BTS back to their roots

After almost four years without a new group album, ARIRANG didn't feel like an ordinary comeback. The title alone carries a lot of meaning. Arirang is one of Korea's best-known folk songs, so deeply tied to Korean culture that it's often called the unofficial national anthem. For BTS, a group whose career has long stretched far beyond Korea, choosing that name is hard to read as a coincidence.

The album came out on March 20, 2026, as BTS's fifth studio album and their first full group album since Map of the Soul: 7. The comeback delivered big numbers right away. ARIRANG became the seventh BTS album to hit number one on the Billboard 200, with 641,000 equivalent album units in its first week in the US. The title single SWIM debuted at number one on the Billboard Hot 100 at the same time.

The album has 14 songs, and even a first pass through the tracklist shows how wide-ranging it sounds. Body to Body, Hooligan, Aliens, FYA 2.0, NORMAL, One More Night, and the rest move between hip-hop, pop, R&B, and electronic production, without ever feeling like BTS is trying to remake one of their older albums. ARIRANG sounds more like a group reuniting after a long stretch in which all seven members developed their own solo sound.

The connection to Korean identity doesn't stop at the title, though. The name Arirang itself immediately calls up a song that's existed across generations in countless regional versions, tied to feelings of longing, parting, belonging, and return. So the album shouldn't be pictured as an attempt to blend traditional music with contemporary K-pop in every single song. It's more interesting to see it as the album of a group reuniting after a few years on separate paths, deliberately placing a Korean symbol right at the center of that reunion.

The production credits, meanwhile, are strikingly international, and BTS didn't stick to one genre or one type of collaborator this time either. That contrast, between a title that's distinctly Korean and a sound that's thoroughly contemporary and global, is one of the more interesting parts of the whole project.

The comeback wasn't marked by the album alone. The day after its release, BTS held THE COMEBACK LIVE | ARIRANG at Gwanghwamun Square in Seoul, where they performed the new songs live for the first time. The location wasn't a coincidence either: a concert in one of the capital's most recognizable spots further underlined how central Korean identity was to how the whole era was presented. The event was streamed live on Netflix at the same time.

For someone just getting into BTS, ARIRANG is an interesting starting point precisely because it isn't an attempt to return to their sound from 2013, 2016, or 2020. What you hear on the album is a group with thirteen years of a shared career behind them, but also several years during which each member worked on their own. The result isn't a step backward, it's BTS continuing on after everything that changed in the meantime.
