You Never Walk Alone

2017 · Repackage

Title track: Spring Day

In early 2017, BTS released You Never Walk Alone, an expanded edition of the Wings album that continued its story while adding a new, warm note to it. If Wings was about temptation and confronting one's own darkness, this repackage brought what comes after the dark, comfort, hope, and the message that no one has to walk alone. The title itself already reveals that shift in tone.

Alongside all the songs from Wings, the album brought several new ones, and among them two that became essential. The first is Spring Day, today one of their most beloved songs of all. It grew out of a personal moment, as RM came up with its main melody in late 2016 while walking through a Seoul park, inspired by the dry leaves the wind was carrying from the branches. The song, about longing for someone who is no longer there and about waiting for spring after a long winter, became something like an anthem of remembrance and comfort in Korea, a song people return to in moments of loss and hope. It is so special that for years it never left the charts there, and it was also their first major breakthrough on the American market.

The second new song, Not Today, brought a completely opposite, combative energy. Rhythmic and powerful, it was conceived as a call to all outsiders and to anyone who has to fight for their place, carrying the message that a day of defeat might come, but that day is not today. It was an anthem of resistance and solidarity, the perfect counterweight to the gentle Spring Day.

What makes You Never Walk Alone special is exactly that blend of sorrow and strength, sadness and hope. The album rounds off the coming-of-age story from Wings with one comforting thought, that hardship is easier to bear when we are not alone in it. It was also symbolic of the very relationship between the group and their fans, who became exactly that for one another, a support on a shared journey.

The success was immense, as the album climbed high on the charts both at home and around the world, confirming the group's ever faster rise. But above all, You Never Walk Alone remained beloved for its message, one that still echoes in the heart of the fandom today, that however hard the road may be, no one has to walk it alone.
