Love Yourself: Answer

2018 · Compilation

Title track: IDOL

In August 2018, BTS brought their grand love story full circle with the album Love Yourself: Answer, and in the most beautiful way possible. After the thrill of Her and the pain of Tear, this expanded, double album delivered the answer the whole story had been searching for, the realization that true love must begin with loving yourself. It was a bright, inspired conclusion to the most important chapter in their career up to that point.

The album gathered songs from the previous installments and added several new ones, and its overall message was positive and comforting. It opens with the cheerful Euphoria, a solo song in which Jungkook sings of pure happiness, and it moves through other emotional moments as well, such as Jin's Epiphany, in which he sings about the realization that he must learn to love himself. The title track Idol, meanwhile, brought an explosion of confidence and pride in one's own roots, merging modern pop with traditional Korean sounds, and its music video broke the then record for views in the first 24 hours.

The peak of the album, and of the entire story, is the closing track Answer: Love Myself. In it, BTS states outright what the whole trilogy had been building toward, that only someone who comes to love themselves can truly love another and find their own path through life. It was a message that reached far beyond the bounds of music.

The success was immense and historic. Answer became their second album to reach the very top of the American chart, and later the first Korean album to spend an entire year on it. But perhaps even more important than the numbers, it was this very era, carried by its message of self-love, that led RM to deliver a historic speech at the United Nations headquarters, calling on the young people of the world to speak up and love themselves.

Love Yourself: Answer was thus not merely the end of a story, but the moment BTS turned their art into a movement. For many fans, it is precisely the message of this era, the simple yet powerful thought that loving yourself is where everything begins, that connected them most deeply to the group. It was an answer worthy of the entire journey.
