How BTS filmed their own "Spine Breaker" music video in a hotel room

"Spine Breaker" came out in 2014 on the album Skool Luv Affair, but unlike singles such as "Boy In Luv" and "Just One Day," it never got an actual music video. Three years later, BTS decided to right that wrong in their own way. With no set, no serious production, and practically no budget, the members filmed their own MV in a hotel in Chile, with Jin taking on the role of director.

BTS was in Chile in early 2017 for the South American leg of The Wings Tour, and the whole music-video adventure came about as part of the show BTS GAYO. In episode 15, the members were given the task of making their own music video, and "Spine Breaker" was the song chosen. Instead of trying to make something that looked like their big official videos, they decided to fully embrace the fact that all they had was themselves, a camera, and a hotel.

Jin quickly declared himself director and took the new role seriously, at least as seriously as possible while trying to film a video around hotel rooms. The members came up with the scenes themselves, hunting for clothes and props among whatever they had with them, and the hallways, rooms, and bathrooms became improvised sets. Jungkook took on filming part of the footage, while Jin handled directing and also came up with the choreography.

That choreography ended up becoming maybe the most famous part of the whole project. "Spine Breaker" is actually a song with fairly serious social commentary. It's about young people who, under pressure to wear expensive, trendy clothes, ask their parents for things the family might struggle to afford. The Korean phrase behind the title itself refers to kids whose expensive demands figuratively "break their parents' spine." BTS rapped about that topic pretty sharply back in 2014, but three years later they took a completely different approach for the video.

They dressed as over the top as possible, threw on sunglasses, and launched into Jin's deliberately ridiculous choreography. His shoulder and hip movements, the members' dramatic poses, and their completely serious facial expressions while doing something utterly unserious turned the video into one big inside joke. The cheaper the video looked, the better it actually got.

It's especially fun watching how it came together, since nobody had a strictly defined role. One moment someone's in front of the camera, the next they're helping plan a shot, and a few minutes later everyone's together trying to decide what to even film next. Jin acted the whole time as if he had years of directing experience behind him, and the others mostly went along with his ideas, making them even more absurd along the way. The final MV ends up looking less like content from one of the biggest K-pop groups at the time, and more like something seven friends filmed for fun on a trip together.

That's exactly why the video has remained so beloved by ARMY. At a time when BTS already had visually lavish videos like "Blood Sweat & Tears," "Spring Day," and "Not Today," "Spine Breaker" showed a completely different side of the group. Nothing needed to look perfect. It was enough to just let the members do whatever they wanted for a few hours and see what came out of it.

The video ended up giving new life to the song itself along the way. Jin's choreography got so tied to "Spine Breaker" that it didn't stay confined to that hotel room. When BTS performed the song years later, the members reached for the same over-the-top moves and goofing around that came out of that filming session. What started as one BTS GAYO episode's assignment became part of the song's identity.

In the end, "Spine Breaker" got something maybe even better than a classic music video. It got a video where Jin plays director, Jungkook plays cameraman, a hotel plays a film studio, and seven members do whatever comes to mind. It's hard to imagine that's the MV anyone pictured for the song back in 2014, but it's even harder to imagine it any other way today.
