ARIRANG's records: the numbers behind the comeback

Big numbers stopped being news for BTS a long time ago. Still, ARIRANG showed from day one just how much interest was left in the group after almost four years without a new joint album. The records started rolling in almost immediately after it dropped on March 20, 2026.

The first signal came from Korea. According to figures released by BIGHIT MUSIC, ARIRANG sold 3.98 million copies on its first day. It also opened extremely strong in Japan: Billboard Japan logged 548,217 copies sold in the first week, and a number one spot on the Top Albums Sales chart.

In the US, ARIRANG became the seventh BTS album to hit number one on the Billboard 200. It racked up 641,000 equivalent album units in its first week, 532,000 of them through pure album sales. That gave BTS the biggest week by total units for any group since the Billboard 200 adopted its current methodology, which counts sales alongside streaming and other forms of music consumption.

The big numbers weren't limited to physical albums, either. ARIRANG hit number one on Apple Music's albums chart in 115 countries and regions, while SWIM led the global songs chart. All 14 songs from the album also landed on the platform's global Top 100, and Apple Music announced that on the album's release day, BTS set the record for the most streams by a single artist in a single day in the service's history.

SWIM, meanwhile, extended BTS's run on the American singles charts, becoming their seventh number one on the Billboard Hot 100. That put both the album and its lead single at the top of Billboard's two most important charts in the same week.

A few months later came one of the first major Korean honors for the new era. At the KM Chart Awards on July 25, ARIRANG won the Daesang for Album of the Year, while BTS also picked up one of the top Ultimate 12 honors.

All these numbers add up to a pretty clear picture of just how big this comeback was. Four years without a new group album didn't dent interest in BTS at all, ARIRANG posted results in its very first days that stand out even in the catalog of a group used to setting records.
