The BTS members' nicknames, and the stories behind them

If you follow the fandom, you'll quickly notice that hardly anyone calls the BTS members just by their names. Each of the seven has picked up a whole string of nicknames over the years, and behind almost every one is a story, a joke, a talent, or a habit. Some were given to them by fans, some by the other members, and some they came up with themselves. Interestingly, even their stage names are technically a kind of nickname, since three of them perform under names that aren't their real ones. Let's go through all of it, member by member.

Before we start, one useful note on a term that keeps coming up. Age matters a great deal in Korean, and the word hyung means older brother and is used as a term of respect toward an older man. That's why you'll often hear the younger members address someone as hyung. On the flip side, maknae means the youngest member of a group. These two terms are the foundation of a lot of the nicknames here.

Jin, the oldest member, is known above all as Worldwide Handsome. What makes that nickname special is that he came up with it himself. In a 2017 interview, he explained he gave it to himself because so many people told him how good-looking he was, even though, as he jokingly added, he doesn't entirely agree. That self-deprecating, ironic confidence became part of his charm. But Jin has a whole collection of other nicknames too. He's called Car Door Guy and Third Guy from the Left, both born after he went viral for his looks at the Billboard Music Awards. His love of pink earned him Pink Princess, his sense of humor got him Worldwide Funny Guy, and his love of food and cooking earned him Pig Jin and Chef Jin. Fake Maknae and Mad-nae are especially funny, since despite being the oldest, he often acts like the youngest.

Suga, whose real name is Min Yoongi, has a story built right into his stage name. The name Suga comes from the first syllables of the English phrase shooting guard, the basketball position he played in school, and he also liked how the name's sweetness playfully clashes with his cooler stage persona. When he performs solo, he becomes Agust D, which we've covered separately. Fans have also given him a string of cutesy nicknames that clash with his seemingly serious demeanor. He's called Lil Meow Meow, for hair as soft as cat fur and a cat-like nature, and Grandpa Yoongi, because he likes to sleep like an old man. The nickname Min Genius plays on his surname and the fact that he was already a producer at the label before becoming a group member.

RM, the group's leader, had an interesting journey with his own name too. He debuted as Rap Monster, a name he picked up as a trainee from a line in a song he'd written himself, which naturally stuck among the members and collaborators. In 2017 he shortened it to RM, partly because he wanted to break out of the box the word "monster" put him in. He's said himself that the letters can also stand for Real Me. His best-known fan nickname is God of Destruction, for his habit of accidentally breaking or damaging almost anything he touches, a constant source of laughter among the members. His nighttime habits earned him Moon Child too, and being the only member fluent in English got him the joking nickname English Teacher.

j-hope, real name Jung Hoseok, carries a whole message in his stage name. He's summed up his role as the group's sunshine in a line he often introduces himself with, "I'm your hope, you're my hope," a play on his own name. He's most often called Hobi, and that nickname has a nice explanation. In Korean pronunciation, the English word "hope" sounds closer to a soft-b sound, roughly "Hob," and adding a suffix gives you Hobi. His boundless energy and optimism have also earned him names like Sunshine, and his dance skills got him Dance Machine.

Jimin, real name Park Jimin, considered a stage name before debut but ultimately kept his own. His best-known nickname is Mochi, after the Japanese rice cake, earned for the soft, plump cheeks that appear when he puckers his lips. The same rice-cake image shows up in his Korean nickname Manggae-tteok. Fans also call him Chim Chim, an affectionate variation on his name, and Fairy of the Group, for the way he looks after the other members and the grace of his dancing. The nickname Jiminie-pabo, roughly meaning "Jimin's a dummy," was affectionately given to him by V.

V, real name Kim Taehyung, was one of the last members revealed, so there was always a bit of mystery around him. His stage name has its own story too. The label offered him three names, Six, Lex, and V, and he chose V because it stands for victory. Fans affectionately call him TaeTae, a simple variation on his name. His good looks earned him the nickname CGV, standing for Computer Graphic V, since fans jokingly claim he looks too good to be real. For his personal photography and painting projects, he uses the name Vante, keeping that creative side of himself separate from his idol schedule.

Jungkook, the youngest member, carries maybe the most famous nickname of all, Golden Maknae. As we explained, maknae means the youngest in a group, and the "golden" was added because he's proven talented at nearly everything he touches, from singing, dancing, and rapping to sports, drawing, and even driving and cooking. Interestingly, it was RM himself who gave him that nickname, during a livestream together, praising his versatility. Fans most often just call him Kookie, an affectionate shorthand that also happens to sound sweet. He's also earned the nickname Bunny, for the wide smile that resembles a rabbit's and shows up at performances and fan events. A lesser-known bit of trivia is that his stage name almost ended up being Seagull, after the official bird of his hometown Busan, but he ultimately kept his real name after all.

Add it all up, and it's clear these nicknames aren't just for fun. They're part of the language the fandom speaks, a way fans and the members themselves express closeness, humor, and love for each person individually. Behind every name is a small detail of someone's personality, habit, or story, and once you learn them, the whole group starts to feel closer and more human. And that, in the end, is really the point of why fans call them these names at all.
