BTS Universe: the hidden story woven through the music videos and albums

For a lot of people, a first encounter with BTS is simple: a song, a video, a performance. And then you start noticing that certain things in the videos keep repeating. Jin is always filming something with a camera, the members show up in the same locations, motifs of trains, water, fire, and photographs keep coming back, and certain scenes seem to continue years later. That's where one of the biggest BTS rabbit holes begins: BTS Universe, shortened to BU.

BTS Universe is a fictional story featuring seven characters named after the BTS members. That's worth stressing, because Kim Seokjin, Min Yoongi, Jung Hoseok, Kim Namjoon, Park Jimin, Kim Taehyung, and Jeon Jung Kook in the BU aren't the real BTS members. Their families, traumas, accidents, and everything else that happens to them are part of the fiction.

It all started in 2015 with the music video for I NEED U. Instead of a classic video built around choreography, a story appeared about seven friends clearly going through some very hard moments. The original, longer version of the video matters especially, since it contains scenes missing from the shorter cut. At that point, nobody had a manual explaining what they were actually watching. ARMY started connecting details, hunting for clues, and building theories.

RUN followed I NEED U, and the story kept growing. We saw the seven in happier moments of friendship, but also hints that something between them had fallen apart. Videos from the The Most Beautiful Moment in Life era, or HYYH, started looking like pieces of the same story, deliberately shown to us out of order.

That's why you often see the name HYYH come up alongside BU. The abbreviation comes from Hwa Yang Yeon Hwa (화양연화), the Korean name for The Most Beautiful Moment in Life era, referring to the most beautiful, but fleeting, period of life. BU and HYYH aren't quite the exact same thing, though the fandom often uses the names almost interchangeably. HYYH is an era and one of the key pieces of the story, while BTS Universe expanded far beyond it.

A major piece of the puzzle arrived in 2016 with the short films for the album WINGS. Each member got his own film, and the symbols and events started connecting not just to each other, but to literature too, especially Hermann Hesse's novel Demian. A year later came the LOVE YOURSELF Highlight Reels, revealing new parts of the characters' lives and further complicating their relationships and fates.

Over time, what's at the center of the whole story becomes clear too. The seven friends used to be together, but after a series of events they drifted apart, and their fates end tragically. Seokjin gains the ability to travel back through time and tries to save them. The problem is that changing one event often sets off another. Save one person, and something happens to another. Go back again, change something else, and a new problem shows up. So BU becomes a story about a time loop, with Seokjin trying to find the one version of events where all seven survive and end up together again.

And if you try to piece the whole story together just by watching the music videos, you'll want a notebook, a pen, and a pretty large wall for theories pretty quickly. 😄

The reason is simple. The music videos never contained the whole story. A major piece of BU lives in The Notes, texts that appeared alongside BTS albums and were later compiled into The Notes books. They're written like diary entries, with dates and character names, and they explain a lot of what the videos only showed or hinted at.

The story also expanded into the webtoon Save Me, created through a partnership between Big Hit Entertainment and LINE Webtoon. There, the time loop is shown much more directly. Seokjin goes back into the past and tries to save the others, but soon realizes preventing just one tragedy isn't enough. The seven's fates are tangled together in far more complicated ways than he thought.

One reason BU captivated ARMY for so many years was exactly this shared puzzle-solving. Any new video could contain a few seconds of footage that completely overturned an old theory. People pored over dates in The Notes, member positions in photos, recurring objects, graffiti on walls, and seemingly unimportant background details. Some theories turned out to be surprisingly accurate, others went completely in the wrong direction, and that was half the fun.

It's still worth telling official BU content apart from theories, though. Not every BTS video is part of BTS Universe, and not every repeated symbol is proof of a hidden story. At one point, Big Hit started labeling official content belonging to that world with "BU content certified by Big Hit Entertainment," which at least made it a little easier to separate canon from everything ARMY managed to connect on their own.

BTS Universe was never necessary to understand or love BTS's music. You can listen to I NEED U, RUN, or songs from the Love Yourself era for years without knowing anything about time loops and the seven's fictional fates. But once you discover there's another story hiding behind some of those videos, it's hard to watch them the same way again.

Because after that, I NEED U isn't just a video from 2015 anymore. It's the first door into a story ARMY has spent years trying to piece together, frame by frame.
