Why the number seven is special for BTS and ARMY
February 21, 2020

If there's one number that keeps showing up around BTS, it's seven. The reason seems obvious at first: RM, Jin, SUGA, j-hope, Jimin, V, and Jungkook make up a seven-member group. But over the years, seven has become a lot more than just a member count, and turned into one of BTS's most recognizable symbols.
That's why you'll often run into the term OT7 in the fandom. It comes from "One True 7" and gets used when talking about all seven members together, without singling out one member or part of the group. You can have a bias, a favorite solo album, or a favorite song from one member, and still be OT7, one doesn't rule out the other. When ARMY uses the term, it's simply emphasizing BTS as the full seven.
The number seven really came to the forefront in 2020 with the album Map of the Soul: 7. The title wasn't picked at random. The album came out seven years after their debut and looked back at the road the seven members had traveled together up to that point. RM explained in conversations about the album that seven was a very important number for them, precisely because of the seven members and the seven years they'd shared.
That seventh year carried extra weight because of the K-pop industry too. There's long been talk of a so-called "seven-year curse," a term that came about because so many groups break up or change lineup around seven years after debut, often when it's time to renegotiate contracts. BTS renewed their contracts with Big Hit before that point even arrived, so in 2020 their seventh anniversary could be something to celebrate rather than an uncertain deadline.
And then seven became something all seven of them literally carry with them. In 2022, the members started revealing matching "7" tattoos, designed as friendship tattoos. Each member chose a different spot on their body, but the design is the same. RM showed his on his ankle, Jin on his lower back, j-hope above his Achilles tendon, Jimin on his finger, Jungkook behind his ear, V on his thigh, while SUGA kept the location of his tattoo a little secret the longest before revealing it on his shoulder.
What's especially interesting is that tattoo artist POLYC later showed how all seven tattoos can be combined into one shared design. Individually, they're small sevens in different places, but together they represent the same thing all over again: seven members of one group.
That's why seven pops up everywhere in the BTS world today, from the album title and the OT7 label to fan profiles, jewelry, tattoos, and other small references. There's no complicated secret or hidden formula behind it. It started with the simplest fact about BTS: there are seven of them. Everything they've been through together over the years gave that number the rest of its meaning.
